See What Tools Each AI Used

Quick Answer: Every AI response shows a footer with the tools that AI used to generate its answer - web search with citation URLs, file search with file counts, and other indicators. You know exactly where the answer came from.

What You’ll Learn

  • What the tool usage footer shows
  • How to read citation links
  • What the Perplexity web search pill means
  • Why this matters for your work

What It Does

Each AI response has a tool usage footer that shows what the AI did behind the scenes to generate its answer. This tells you whether the AI answered from its training knowledge, searched the web for current information, or pulled from your uploaded files.

What You’ll See

When an AI searched the web, the footer shows a web search indicator with citation URLs. Click any citation to see the source the AI referenced.

Perplexity Web Search Pill

Perplexity has a dedicated web search capability. When it searches the web, a distinct pill appears showing the search was performed. This is especially useful because Perplexity’s web results often include the most current data. When an AI searched your uploaded project files, the footer shows a file search indicator with the number of files referenced. This confirms the AI is working with your specific documents, not just general knowledge.

Other Tool Indicators

Some responses may show other tools the AI used during generation. Each tool type has its own indicator in the footer.

Why This Matters

Trust and verification. When an AI makes a claim, you can check whether it came from:
  • Training data (no tools shown) - the AI’s built-in knowledge, which has a cutoff date
  • Live web results (web search shown) - current information with verifiable sources
  • Your files (file search shown) - your specific uploaded documents
This helps you decide how much to trust any specific claim and whether you need to verify it further.

Tips

  • If an AI response doesn’t show any tool usage, it answered entirely from its training knowledge. For time-sensitive topics, follow up with “@Perplexity, search for the latest data on this.”
  • Click citation URLs to verify claims. The AI’s summary might simplify or miss nuance from the original source.
  • When file search appears, the AI is grounding its answer in your uploaded documents. This is especially important for questions about your specific business or data.
  • The tool usage footer is visible on both desktop and mobile.
