What You’ll Learn

  • How to pivot a conversation without losing context
  • The difference between a follow-up and a direction change
  • When to redirect vs. when to start fresh
  • Techniques for smooth transitions

How It Works

Send a message with your new direction. The AIs:
  1. Keep all previous context in memory
  2. Shift their focus to your new topic
  3. Connect the new direction to prior discussion (when relevant)
No special commands, no “forget everything” needed. Just say what you want.

Examples

From Research to Action

Previous: Discussing market research on competitor pricing

New direction: "Based on what we've learned, draft our pricing page copy.
Three tiers: Starter, Pro, Enterprise."
The AIs use the research context to inform the copy.

From Analysis to Different Analysis

Previous: Analyzing technical architecture options

New direction: "Let's shift to the team side. Given this architecture
choice, what skills do we need to hire for?"
The technical discussion informs the hiring analysis.

Complete Topic Change

Previous: Discussing marketing strategy

New direction: "New topic: I have a performance review tomorrow.
How should I structure my self-assessment?"
The AIs pivot completely while retaining the marketing context in case you come back.

From Broad to Specific

Previous: General discussion about AI in healthcare

New direction: "Zoom in on radiology specifically. What's the current
state of AI-assisted diagnosis, and what does the regulatory
pathway look like?"

Redirect vs. Follow-Up vs. Fresh Start

ActionWhen to UseContext
Follow-upGoing deeper on the same topicBuilds on prior responses
RedirectChanging topic but prior context helpsKeeps history, new focus
Fresh startCompletely unrelated or need clean slateNew conversation, no baggage

Techniques for Clear Redirects

Signal the shift explicitly

"Let's change direction. Instead of strategy, let's focus on execution."

Keep relevant context, drop the rest

"Keep the budget constraints we discussed in mind, but now I want to
explore a completely different approach to the same problem."

Ask the AIs to connect the dots

"We just discussed X. Now I want to explore Y. How do these connect?"

Scope narrowing

"From everything we've covered, I only care about the pricing
angle now. Let's go deep on that and ignore the rest."

Tips

  • You don’t need permission to change direction. Just do it.
  • The AIs won’t get confused. They handle context switches gracefully.
  • If you want to completely ignore prior context: “Forget our earlier discussion. Fresh perspective: [new question]”
  • If you want prior context to inform the new direction: “Given what we discussed about X, now consider Y”
  • Changing direction is normal. Good conversations evolve.
