How to Get ChatGPT Free Trial for Plus and Pro Plans, Student and Regional Offers

Which trials actually exist right now, who qualifies, and what happens when one ends.

ChatGPT is free to use, but the Free plan is not the same thing as a free trial of ChatGPT Plus or Pro.

OpenAI periodically offers limited-duration trials and promotional subscriptions through referrals and targeted campaigns, with availability depending on the promotion, account and location.

This guide explains what is currently available, who qualifies and what happens when a trial ends.

Does ChatGPT offer a free trial in 2026?

Not as one standing offer you can sign up for. The Free plan exists permanently for every account, and paid-plan trials exist only as specific promotions. OpenAI’s own help documentation describes paid-subscription trials as campaign offers that can be limited to eligible users, delivered through referral links or promotions, and that vary by region, duration and requirements.

That is why two people asking “does ChatGPT have a free trial” can both be right when one says yes and the other says no. One account was targeted by a campaign. The other was not. There is no page on chatgpt.com where everyone can start a Plus trial today, and any article that claims there is has confused the Free plan with a trial. Where the plans, models and features stand overall is covered in our ChatGPT guide, and this page stays on the one question that guide sends people here for.

ChatGPT Free vs a ChatGPT Plus free trial

These get merged into one idea constantly, and they are different products with different rules.

ChatGPT Free
A permanent plan, not a countdown. You get the current default model with usage caps, slower access at peak times, and limits on the advanced features. It never expires and never asks for a card. If you have never paid OpenAI anything, this is what you are using.
A Plus free trial
Temporary access to the paid Plus plan, granted by a specific promotion. Higher limits, priority access and the paid feature set for as long as the promotion defines. When it ends, you either pay or drop back to Free, and if a card was attached, the paying part happens automatically.

Five Frontier AIs Conversation Example

Simplified Demo of
Suprmind’s Sequential Mode

This is an illustrative showcase. The company, metrics and valuation below are fictional. The example demonstrates the correction, rebuttal and revision pattern of Sequential mode rather than presenting investment advice or benchmark data.

Simplified · Sequential mode 5 models active
ChatGPT leans yes
Surface read says yes. The target could double our addressable market, and $42M equals 6x its stated ARR. On the headline numbers, the strategic case looks plausible.
Claude flag
The retention figure breaks the headline case. At 78% net revenue retention, the existing customer base contracts every year, so a 6x ARR price assumes growth the current economics do not support.
Perplexity correction
The precedent cited in the target’s deck cannot be verified in the supplied files, so it should not anchor the valuation. The price case now depends on retention recovery and credible cross-sell evidence.
Gemini revised
Revising my read. Once the unverified precedent is removed and retention is priced correctly, the bull case loses its anchor. At $42M, the acquisition does not clear a reasonable diligence threshold.
Grok pushes back
Pushing back on the pile-on: weak retention does not make the asset worthless. A lower entry price, founder-retention earn-out and evidence of recoverable churn could preserve the strategic case. But those conditions need contractual proof.
ChatGPT re-priced
Updating the model. Pricing the retention risk and integration cost puts risk-adjusted fair value between $24M and $28M, well below $42M. Inside that band, the strategic upside begins to compensate for the downside.
Claude conditions
Two gates before close, whatever the price: NRR above 95% for two consecutive quarters, and an earn-out tied to team retention rather than headline revenue. Without both, a discount only buys the same problem cheaper.
Perplexity evidence
Using the scenario assumptions, a 3x to 4x ARR range is more defensible until retention recovers. On $7M ARR, that supports an offer between $21M and $28M rather than the requested $42M.
Gemini consensus
Converging: an entry near $26M sits inside the supported range. With the retention covenants and earn-out written into the deal, it survives the main objections raised in this thread.
Grok risk
One risk remains unpriced: the cost of walking. A rival acquisition could close the strategic window, so the board should compare that downside with the value destroyed by overpaying.
Master Document – Verdict
Do not acquire at $42M. Re-engage near $26M, conditional on two quarters of NRR recovery and a retention earn-out in writing. Otherwise, walk.

How ChatGPT Plus free trials, promo codes
and invites actually work

There is no public promo-code box to hunt for. An OpenAI ChatGPT Plus free trial arrives through channels the company controls: a banner or email on an eligible account, a referral or invite link sent by someone with invites to give, or a promotion attached to a partner campaign. Each offer defines its own eligibility, and redemption is typically limited to accounts that have not already used that promotion or an equivalent one.

Two practical consequences. First, third-party sites selling or listing “ChatGPT Plus free trial codes” are selling something OpenAI does not distribute that way, so treat them as noise at best. Second, if an offer does appear on your account, read its terms before accepting, because some promotional subscriptions require a payment method up front and convert to a paid plan the moment the trial window closes.

Does ChatGPT free trial availability
depend on your country?

Yes, it can. OpenAI’s promotional subscriptions are campaign-specific, and campaigns can be scoped to particular regions, particular account types, or both. A trial your colleague in one country sees on their account may never appear on yours, and that is the system working as designed rather than a bug to work around.

Geography also changes what paying looks like after a trial, since list price, tax treatment and app-store markups differ by country. The country-by-country numbers live on our ChatGPT Plus pricing breakdown, which is the page to read once the question stops being “can I try it” and becomes “what will it cost.”

Our GPT trial is boring, it doesn’t have all the special geo terms, conditions
and lotteries.

Practically everybody can register it.

ChatGPT free trial for students
and other eligible groups

Special programs exist, and they are narrower than the articles about them. Two are documented as of September 2026, and neither is a general Plus trial anyone can claim.

Students
OpenAI’s documented student offer gives verified university students in the US and Canada $100 in credits, 2,500 credits, for Codex, the coding product. It is a real benefit and it is not a ChatGPT Plus trial, despite how it gets summarised in roundups. Verification runs through the student-status check, not a promo code.
US service members and veterans
Qualifying US service members, recently transitioned veterans and retirees can get a full year of ChatGPT Plus after verification. This is the largest ChatGPT offer currently documented, it is genuinely free for twelve months, and it is scoped to exactly the group named. Eligibility is checked, not claimed.

Is there a ChatGPT Pro or Business free trial?

Searches for a ChatGPT Pro free trial outnumber the offers themselves, so treat Pro and Business separately, because they behave differently. Pro has no standing trial. Access to it arrives the same way Plus trials do, through occasional targeted promotions, and paying full price is the reliable route. Business plans are trialed through sales conversations and campaign credits rather than a self-serve trial button, and terms there are set per agreement rather than per promotion page.

If a page tells you there is a permanent one-click Pro trial, it is describing something OpenAI does not document. The honest version is less convenient and worth knowing before you plan an evaluation around it.

How long does a ChatGPT free trial last?

As long as its promotion says, and no longer. People commonly search for a one-month ChatGPT Plus trial, but OpenAI does not define one standard trial length. The duration is supplied with each individual offer, and OpenAI’s own documentation uses three months only as an example of what a campaign might grant, not as a default.

What the promotion defines

Card-backed trials convert to paid automatically
Renewal terms

Cancel before the end date to avoid the first charge

If you accept a card-backed trial and decide against paying, cancel inside the trial window. The steps are the same as ending a normal subscription, and our guide to cancelling a ChatGPT subscription walks through them for web, iPhone and Android.

What happens when a ChatGPT free trial ends

Two endings exist, and which one you get was decided the day you accepted the offer. If a card was attached, the trial converts to a paid subscription on its end date and the first charge lands automatically. If no card was attached, the account drops back to the permanent Free plan. Either way your chat history stays, so nothing you wrote disappears with the trial.

The end date is never a mystery, even when it feels like one. It sits in Settings under Subscription as the renewal date, and the offer’s confirmation email states it outright. If your trial already expired and you want the paid features back, the options are exactly three: subscribe at full price, stay on Free, or run GPT somewhere a trial is still open.

How to cancel a ChatGPT free trial
before it charges you

Cancel before the renewal deadline if you don’t want the promotion to convert into a paid subscription. Do not assume you will keep promotional access after cancelling – some free promotions may end immediately. Check the terms of the specific offer before cancelling early.

Step 1 – Open billing settings
On chatgpt.com go to Settings, then Subscription. The manage screen shows the plan and its end date, which is the date a charge would land.
Step 2 – Cancel the plan
Choose manage, then cancel. Access continues until the trial end date and no charge lands. Cancelling early costs you nothing you had not already been given.
Subscribed in the app?
Then the App Store or Google Play owns the billing, and the trial cancels in the store’s subscription screen, not on chatgpt.com.

The step-by-step walkthrough for web, iPhone and Android covers every variant, including the ones the settings screen hides.

OpenAI ChatGPT Free Trial for Plus and Pro Plans

ChatGPT Free Trial FAQ

Does ChatGPT have a free trial?

Not a universal one. The Free plan is permanent and available to everyone, while trials of the paid plans exist only as targeted promotions, referral invites and eligibility programs. Whether you can get one depends on the campaign, your account and sometimes your country.

How do I get a ChatGPT Plus free trial?

You cannot request one. Offers arrive on eligible accounts through banners, emails, referral links or partner campaigns, each with its own terms. If nothing is showing on your account, there is no code to enter or page to visit that changes that.

Is there a ChatGPT Plus free trial for 1 month?

Not as a standard. Each promotion sets its own length, and OpenAI’s documentation treats specific durations as examples rather than defaults. A one-month figure you see on a third-party site describes one past campaign, not a current entitlement.

Do ChatGPT free trials require a credit card?

Some do and some do not, and the offer’s terms say which. Card-backed trials convert to a paid subscription automatically when the window closes, so cancel before the end date if you do not want the first charge.

Do students get ChatGPT Plus for free?

The documented student offer, as of September 2026, is $100 in Codex credits for verified university students in the US and Canada, which is not a Plus trial. The current genuinely free year of Plus goes to qualifying US service members, recently transitioned veterans and retirees after verification.

Can I try GPT free without any ChatGPT promotion?

Yes. Suprmind’s 7-day trial includes GPT alongside Claude, Gemini and Grok in one shared conversation, needs no credit card and no code, and completing the onboarding checklist grants Pro Preview, which adds Perplexity for the rest of the trial.

Why is the ChatGPT Plus free trial not available on my account?

Because no active campaign is targeting your account. Offers are scoped by region, account history and prior redemptions, and the same applies to Go and Pro promotions. There is nothing to fix on your side, and no support ticket changes it.

How do I check when my ChatGPT free trial ends?

Settings, then Subscription, shows the renewal date, which is the trial’s end date. The offer’s confirmation email states the same date. Cancel before it if you do not want a card-backed trial to convert.

Why is my card declined for a ChatGPT free trial?

Card-backed promotions need a card that supports recurring billing, so prepaid and virtual cards commonly fail, and a card country that does not match the offer’s region can too. Try a standard credit card, and if that fails the offer’s terms or OpenAI support are the next stop.

What does the free trial limit exceeded message mean?

That message is about usage caps, not billing. The Free plan, and some promotional plans, cap messages per time window and reset after a few hours. Waiting resets it, upgrading raises it, and no payment problem is involved.

How do I activate a ChatGPT free trial in the mobile app?

If an offer targets your account, it appears on the app’s subscription screen and activates there. The app store then owns the billing, including cancellation, and app-store prices can run higher than web checkout.

How much does a ChatGPT Plus free trial cost after it ends?

Nothing during the trial, then $20 a month on US web checkout before tax if it converts. Regional prices and app-store markups move that number, and the full country-by-country breakdown shows where.
